I believe one of the most important factors to consider when setting up your breast pumping station is what equipment do YOU need on hand when pumping.
This will look different for everyone so there are no right or wrong answers. It is all about what you need to make your pumping sessions more comfortable and streamlined.
That said there are some common breast pumping essentials you’ll want to include, as well as some nice to haves.
Key Takeaways
- Consider where you want your pumping station to be set up. Comfort and ergonomics are important considerations when setting up a pumping station.
- A breast pumping station should include essential breast pumping equipment such as your breast pump, breast pads, and nipple cream.
- Your breastfeeding station should include items that make your pumping experience easier. You don’t need to include everything.
Where Should Your Pumping Station Be?
When setting up your pumping station, I think it’s crucial to select a location that balances privacy, comfort, and convenience. Ideally, choose an area within your home or workplace where you can pump without interruptions. This could be a spare room, home office, or a corner of your bedroom.
I highly recommend choosing somewhere with an adjustable chair with a backrest to provide support for your back and arms. It should also be padded for added comfort. If you prefer pumping in bed, make sure you have plenty of supportive cushions around you. I really love this Storkcraft Premium Hoop Glider and Ottoman as it’s high quality, super comfortable, looks great, and it’s affordable!
Also make sure there’s a nearby power outlet for electric breast pumps and ample storage space for organizing your pumping supplies. As well as a small table or side table to store everything on.
If it works better for you, you can even opt for creating a portable pumping station by using a rolling cart. I personally like this idea as then you can tuck it away when it’s not in use, or easily move it to a location where you want to pump. As your child grows, having flexibility can be very handy.
What To Include in Your Breast Pumping Station
What you include in your pumping station is really a personal preference. It will also depend on the type of breast pump you have, how regularly you’re pumping, and if you are also breastfeeding your baby in the same location.
That said, here is my extensive list of breast pumping items you may want to have on hand in your breast pumping station. Choose what works for you!
Breast Pump
This is an obvious one, but your breast pump is the most important equipment for pumping milk.
If you’re using an electric like the Spectra S2 or battery-operated pump like the Momcozy M5, you will want to be close to a power outlet so you can easily plug in your pump or recharger.
I like to have my recharge plugged in continuously so I can just add the battery when needed without needing to fuss with plugging it in.
Pumping Bra
A pumping bra is a must-have for hands-free pumping, allowing you to multitask while expressing milk. Whether you’re checking emails, reading a book, or simply relaxing, the freedom of movement provided by a pumping bra enhances efficiency and convenience during pumping sessions.
It can be really handy to have your clean pumping bra at your breast pumping station so you don’t have to go hunting one down to get started.
Sanitizer
Keeping your breast pumping station clean is essential for the health of both you and your baby. I like to keep both hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes in my breast pumping station. I hand sanitize before each pumping session and use the wipes to regularly clean and disinfect the breast pumping station.
Breast pump wipes are also another sanitizer I recommend. They are really useful for providing a quick cleaning option between your pumps.
Snacks
Pumping sessions can leave you feeling hungry and depleted, making it important to have nutritious snacks on hand to refuel your body.
Honestly, I have never been as hungry as when I was breastfeeding and pumping!
I liked to have granola bars and trail mix in my breast pumping station as they have a long shelf life and are a great hunger buster when you are pumping.

Water Bottle
Staying hydrated is crucial for milk production. Breastfeeding mothers should aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Keeping a large water bottle nearby while pumping can help ensure that they are staying hydrated. A water bottle with a straw can make it easier to drink water while pumping.
Tissues and Wet Wipes
Accidents and spills are inevitable during pumping sessions, making tissues and wet wipes essential for quick clean-ups. Whether it’s a spill of breast milk or a runny nose, having these items on hand ensures a hygienic and comfortable pumping experience.
Nipple Cream
Pumping can sometimes lead to soreness or irritation, making nipple cream a valuable resource for soothing and protecting sensitive skin. Applying nipple cream before and after pumping sessions can help prevent discomfort and promote healing, ensuring a pain-free pumping experience.
Breast Pads
Breast pads are another essential item for a breast pumping station. They help to absorb any leaking milk and prevent embarrassing leaks. There are two types of breast pads: disposable and reusable.
Disposable breast pads are convenient and easy to use. They come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses, so it’s important to choose one that fits well and provides enough protection. Reusable breast pads are more eco-friendly and cost-effective in the long run. They can be washed and reused multiple times, but it’s important to change them frequently to prevent bacterial growth.
Hand Lotion
Frequent washing of pump parts and hands can lead to dry skin, making lotion a necessity for keeping your skin hydrated and moisturized. By applying hand lotion regularly, you can prevent dryness and maintain soft, smooth skin despite the frequent washing.
Hair ties
Keeping your hair out of the way during pumping sessions ensures a comfortable and hassle-free experience. Hair ties or a large hair clip prevent hair from falling into the breast pump or getting in the way while you’re trying to focus on expressing milk.
Phone Charger
Your phone is likely your go-to source of entertainment during pumping sessions, whether you’re scrolling through social media, watching videos, or catching up on emails. Keep a phone charger nearby to ensure your device stays powered up and ready for use throughout your pumping routine.
Entertainment
Consider adding some entertainment options to your pumping station to help pass the time during pumping sessions. This could include a TV, tablet, smartphone, or book to keep you occupied and relaxed.
Night Light
A night light provides gentle illumination during nighttime pumping sessions, creating a cozy atmosphere without being too bright or harsh. Having adequate lighting ensures you can see what you’re doing and feel comfortable during late-night pumping sessions.
TV remote
Entertainment is key during pumping sessions to help pass the time and keep you relaxed and distracted. Keep the TV remote close so you can easily switch channels or adjust the volume without interrupting your pumping routine.
Muslin Burp Cloth
From cleaning up spills to protecting your clothing to using as a light cover, muslin burp cloths are great to have in your pumping cart. In fact, they are just great to have everywhere when you have a baby; the car, your pumping bag or diaper bag, stroller, nursery.
Extra Valves and Membranes
Valves and membranes are crucial components of a breast pump. They help regulate the suction and expression of milk. Having extra valves and membranes on hand can be helpful in case of wear and tear or damage to the original parts. It is advisable to replace them every few months to ensure optimal performance.
Tubing
Tubing is another essential component of a breast pump. It connects the breast shield to the motor and allows milk to flow from the breast to the collection container. It is important to replace the tubing regularly to prevent contamination and ensure hygiene.
It is recommended to have an extra set of tubing on hand in case of damage or malfunction. Before purchasing tubing, ensure that it is compatible with your breast pump model.
Clean Bottles
Having your spare clean breast milk bottles at your breast pumping station just makes sense! They are there ready for when you need them.
Clean Bottles Caps
Putting a bottle cap on your breast milk bottle straight away means you’re less likely to end up with spills, especially when you are unhooking your pump.
Breast Milk Storage Bags
I really do like having all my breast pumping supplies in the one location so they are there when I need them, so for me, having my breast milk storage bags in my breast pumping station makes sense. That said, I realize some prefer to have these in the kitchen where any spills during the transfer as easier to clean up. I say do what works for you.
Pumping Schedule
If you’re a paper and pen type of person, you’ll probably want to have your pumping schedule on hand.
Instruction Manuals
If you run into issues with your breast pump during your pumping session, it can be really handy to have your breast pump instruction manual right there! Alternatively, if you have your phone on you, you can check out how to videos on YouTube. I have a ton on my YouTube channel.
